Album Review
After delivering the complete speed/thrash/pop metal mix in the late 80s, Helloween disappeared into Pomposity Land in the early 90s, taking the most amazing aspect of 10 years to recall the sound their original fans appreciated to such an extent.
And to celebrate, they unleashed their extraordinary sound on some of their favorite pop and rock songs of the past couple of decades. “Metal Jukebox” is a mixed little collection, to say the least. The Scorpions’ “He’s A Woman–She’s a Man” and Faith No More’s “From Out Of Nowhere” are the two nearest tracks to what Helloween are normally about. They step along as strong shaking, great fun tracks. From there, the album ventures into, all things considered, space.
David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” is given a faithful, aware treatment here. Nobody shows improvement over Bowie, yet this is about as acceptable as you’ll actually hear this song done by anyone else. Andi Deris’ voice isn’t a match for Bowie’s nevertheless he does as well as he possibly can without sounding strained. Also having a couple of decades advantage over the original, in which time production strategies have improved markedly, Markus Grosskopf’s wandering basslines bubble their way higher in with the general mish-mash than on the old classic.
ABBA’s “Lay All Your Love On Me” and The Beatles’ “All My Loving” are perhaps the furthest taken out from the originals, and both are pulled off with great impact the vibe of the originals is kept, while simultaneously being given a kick in the arse. That’s right, Helloween actually have that ear for great pop tunes, regardless of whether they didn’t compose them. And it also shows Paul and John, and Benny and Bjorn, could well have been storeroom headbangers these songs translate to a metalled–up sound extremely well.
There are a couple of all the more straight rockers, similar to a fairly good front of Jethro Tull’s “Locomotive Breath”, and “White Room” by Cream, yet it is the lesser–known songs which really make this album. The instrumental “Hocus Pocus” by, er… Center allows Helloween’s great guitar couple to really let strip, with strong riffing and ordinary guitar performances, so often dismissed these days. There are a couple of other generally secret jewels shrouded away here which really set this album up. It could easily have been an activity in metallic karaoke self–parody, or an absolute arse–kissing accolade album. It’s most certainly not. It’s a grounded metal band showcasing what they can do and where they came from, and having loads of fun while they do it.
