Album Review
This was Helloween’s first really good album after the departure of old vocalist Michael Kiske and the induction of new hard rock mourner Andi Deris, and what most people don’t realize is that this album is much better than anything they’ve done with Kiske, too. This is a much more individualistic and bizarre album than anything they have done before, and it stands proudly on its own feet, without trying to be something it is not and without stopping the colossal festival of kicking ass even for a second.
Helloween as a band has always possessed a huge and manic creative undertone that apparently possessed them from the beginning of their career to never create anything that sounds half-hearted, uninspired or boring. Even when their ideas are not so great, they continue to move forward with conviction and enough strength to overcome a whole field of cows. They have always remained true to the Power Metal genre, even when they are more eccentric; pushing and pulling the boundaries of their native genre, never straying far enough from the path to alienate their fans or becoming stale or clumsy. Fortunately, Better Than Raw is not a bad experiment at all, despite being by far the most esoteric and bizarre of the Deris-era materials so far.
However, this band cannot be explained in words, they are great composers and you never know what will be next. “Push” is a good start, very heavy and almost like a painkiller, with Deris playing notes high enough to break a window, but never clicking. “Falling Higher” is better, a typical Happy Helloweenish tune with a fast tempo and a great chorus, but it is with “Hey Lord!” that the band gets into its groove. It’s a slower song, but it’s not exactly a ballad either, with an impressive repertoire of heavenly choruses that will cheer up even the most misanthropic of teenagers who cut their wrists, and Helloween has never done anything like this before or since. “Don’t Spit on My Mind” is a little weaker, although it’s quite fun when you don’t pay it all your attention, with a great beat, but “Revelation” is the real gem here – an 8-minute epic with staccato Thrash riffing under an elegant melodic base and a catchy Helloween chorus, which holds up for the duration and never gets boring. “Time” sounds like Pink Floyd with a Helloween chorus at the top, and it’s also a great song, and “Handful of Pain” is a rock-solid tempo rocker. “Lavdate Domnivm” is another gem, a chimerical Latin-Power Metal anthem with a medium tempo that works surprisingly well, and “Midnight Sun” is a solid closing, though less memorable than the songs that precede it.
