About this Album
I will start this review by saying that Everlasting Flame seems like a celebration of what power metal is all about. Like a love letter from Rami Keränen, a true veteran of Finnish melodic power metal. The album fuses many traditional elements with a more modern power metal style. Also, what is often a marketing tool to say that ‘the album really mixes everything from the band’s new and old albums’, really seems to be true in this case. Whether this translates into high quality or not is something we’ll get to later. Also, Dreamtale ages like a fine wine is something I thought I would never say, although experience is on their side having been around for over 23 years now.
At times the nostalgia, inspired songwriting and modern sound of the record, with a damn fine 14 songs, results in a cohesive album. All this from a band that is really underrated and has only garnered respect and fans in the shadow of the big power metal bands. In terms of what’s on this album? Well pretty much everything from ballads to fast paced Stratovarius songs, to moments that have a lot in common with Nightwish, to drinking songs like Tanhupallo and of course those trademark Dreamtale melodic power metal songs that are sprinkled throughout.
There are two things on the album that surprised me the most. Nitte Valo’s vocal range on this album is incredible and a pleasure to listen to. I may not have heard enough of Nitte’s voice on other projects, as we all know he can sing rock and heavy metal parts like nobody’s business, but he also has some pop and even operatic parts that sound great. The other thing that surprised me and is an important part of this album is its rhythm and structure. Listening to the album I don’t feel like listening to the same song over and over again. Which is a great thing, especially with so many songs. While there aren’t many gems on the album, there is enough variety and changes of pace. This is all helped by Keränen’s riffs and solos that are on point and Kaasalainen’s keyboards have some tricks as well. Rami Keränen utilizes the fact that he has two singers to a great extent. Jarno Vitri being the other singer fits the band like a glove and has a similar voice to Tomi Viiltola on the Ocean’s Heart album.
I am very happy that Keränen and the band have managed to put out an album like this. It has the potential to bridge the gap between the more mainstream listeners who enjoy bands like Battle Beast or Beast in Black, but also fans of more traditional power metal or at least fans of the more melodic side of power metal. The only perfect part of the album is the production done by Mikko Karmila at Finnvox Studios, which leaves practically nothing else to be desired. The lack of true hit songs still hurts even if very few flaws are found on the album.
