About this Album
This is the place where Symphony X began. On this album, Russel Allen got the microphone and demonstrated to the planet that he is a progressive/power metal amazing powerhouse. His soaring voice helps this album considerably more than Romeo’s insane neo-classical riffs, and Pinnella’s keys. Presently, this album is exceedingly progressive and technical. Note the use of the words ‘progressive and technical,’ not the usage of the word wank. I call attention to that diction because of the fact that sometimes absurd technicality can ruin a band (See Cynic). Each song on this album is exceedingly catchy and memorable.
I do feel that I need to mention the production of this album, because I realize that some are sticklers for amazing production. This album does not have the levels of production that are present in Paradise Lost or The Odyssey. In any case, similar to the progressive and technical tendencies, the production quality doesn’t detract from the music. The bass is very audible, which is always a plus.
Presently, this is a progressive metal album. Plain and simple. The only power metal influences shown are the occasional heaping of cheese onto the lyrics (Savage Curtain closes in on you) or Allen’s soaring, powerful voice. Don’t expect something bone-crunchingly heavy when you purchase this album, yet don’t expect an album brimming with prog. rock anthems reminiscent of the 70’s. This album finds an ideal medium between abrasive heaviness, and the excessively soft sound. It is definitely an album that thrives in atmosphere, one that Symphony X have always been unable to match. (Which is something to be thankful for, since the definition of progression is not throwing the same thing out again and again)
The feature of this album is without question The Edge of Forever. It very well may be compared to a nine minute orgasm, chalked brimming with intricate melodies, odd timing schemes, and epic vocals. One almost finds himself obeying the imperiousness present in Allen’s voice as he commands you to close your eyes and recall discordant lullabies of days long by whilst ‘Whispering’ ‘A Winter’s Dream.’
