About this Album
For all the hype surrounding Necrophobic’s latest release, I thought it was necessary to visit their albums that went beyond the first couple. Dawn Of The Damned came out in October last year, and this was a clear sign from the start that I was wrong to sleep on the later material. For the uninitiated, they are a Swedish black/death metal band, widely regarded as pioneers of the style. Although they have stuck to it since the early 90s, it certainly holds up.
What’s important for a veteran band is to know how to gradually move forward with the style without going overboard or doing the opposite and isolating themselves. Necrophobic have found this nice medium in their latest work. Atmosphere plays an important role on this record, throwing fiercely fast drum blasts for a whole gradient of noise to get around. This acts as a sturdy barrier to go with the contradictory riffing, as it’s mostly done with tremolos and flattened basslines. All of this together creates a thick, saturated base that is heavier than a train car.
But that alone wouldn’t be enough, would it? The selling point is to use this in a way that focuses. Higher, wailing, sporadic notes act as a second rhythm section in alternating stages to help the band stay above the surface. Given that traditional death riffs are a little rarer in their formula these days, this is necessary. The vocal style also adds a dash of melody here and there, despite being almost entirely done in a black metal style. “Tartarian Winds” is an incredible example for how it cuts down a bit on the intensity in exchange for a tighter, more swelling song structure. “Mirror Black” acts as its opposite, strictly riding the intensity throughout.
The most impressive thing about Dawn Of The Damned is its ability to use repetition so effectively for an album approaching fifty minutes. Varying a technique like that across the board takes serious work, and I’m here for all of it. The placement helps too, as ‘The Return Of A Long Lost Soul’ is one of the darkest following one of the most explosive. “The Shadows” captures it all so well, opening on a chaotic note with the solo before moving on to a more steady verse. The underlying style of repetition is never lost.
The main point to pick up is that they’re still going stronger than ever in 2020. It might not be The Nocturnal Silence, but I wouldn’t want it to be. There’s certainly a necessary mood for something like this, but the songwriting exceeds expectations as to what can typically be extracted from such fruit.
