WARMEN continue the chosen path: Instrumentals become less and songs with guest vocalists more. The eponymous instrumental “First Of The Five Elements” opens the album with a pumping keyboard sample and a dry guitar riff. The Wirman brothers engage in a typical musical duel, but the drummer and bassist also get to play a brief solo at times. On the rest of the album they don’t have a noteworthy appearance anymore. A nice prelude, but no special instrumental, of which there is also only one more on the album. That’s just as well, because the instrumentals are some of the weaker material on the album. Is Janne “Warmen” Wirman slowly running out of ideas?
Instead, five guest singers are allowed to immortalize their voices on “First Of The Five Elements”: Jonna Kosonen (who already sang on the previous album), Timo Kotipelto (STRATOVARIUS), Pasi Rantanen (ex-THUNDERSTONE), Alexi Laiho (CHILDREN OF BODOM) and Marko Waara (ex-TUNNELVISION). The songs, be it “Eye Of The Storm” with Kotipelto or the good-la-la tune “Don’t Bring Her Here” with Kosonen, have a strong Power Metal impact and are all in the mid-tempo range. Only “High Heels On Cobblestone” with CHILDREN OF BODOM frontman Laiho has a bit more bite. A little more bite would also have done the two cover songs “Black Cat” (JANET JACKSON) and “Seperate Ways” (JOURNEY) good, because they sound on the whole like the originals.
