Fan review: To die for’s 2001 release, Epilogue, is a classic example of the high quality goth metal that has been coming out of the European continent in recent years. Sentenced, HIM, Entwine, Type O Negative, Charon and Cemetary are just a few of the bands that have produced similar dark and melancholic messages of love and betrayal. All the ingredients are here: deep, soulful vocals, crunchy guitars, mournful keyboards and a tight rhythm section.
The influence of bands like Depeche Mode and The Mission is clearly present. But the production on this album is on another level. Mastered by Finnish wizard Mika Jussila, the sound quality is simply stunning, from the crunchy guitars to the steady rhythm section. If that wasn’t enough, frontman Jape Peratalo has one of the best vocal sets seen in this genre in years, and the superior production clearly captures that.
The “guest” performances by drummer Tonmi Lillman (of Savatage) and Tanya (ex-Lullacry) are excellent, with Lillman keeping the groove nice and tight on drums and bass, and Tanya’s vocals being as beautiful as ever. Lillman’s talents as a producer also come to the fore.
While arguably not as good as more successful bands like Sentenced or HIM, To die for are undeniably a quality band producing catchy and beautifully crafted music. Highly recommended.
