About this Album
Estonia is one of a trio of Eastern European countries that received independence from Russia in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Check out the incredible Singing Revolution. The conditions of the world are favourable for a band like Metsatöll. The Estonian people want to show that, as an independent country, they embrace their ancient culture and modernity.
Metsatöll is a simple, aggressive heavy metal band that shares the focus between all instruments. Iivakivi is a marvellous album because it shows their dynamic in both classical playing and the metal paradigm. The bass is honoured on this album, while many producers reduce it to a virtually inaudible rumble.
Piper is an influential player, using appropriate melodies to accompany the music. Another great addition is the Estonian round chant called ‘joik’, which is sing-along in nature. The appearance of folk themes does not destroy the music, though. It is still groove-oriented and raw. Sõjasarv (track 4), which illustrates their sound well. I can’t help but think how much fun it would be to play on stage with these guys.
The pipes alone are not the folk aspect of the music. The lyrical content is about ancient Estonian myths. The Russian educational systems installed by the USSR would have completely erased any history and cultural knowledge, they revive these myths and bring them to a state of glory.
So, all in all, it has the best of both worlds to offer. It’s a historical monument in itself, but it’s also accessible and a fantastic album to listen to.
