Album Review Helvetios Mailorder Edition
Bands who are able to be moved to the highest point of the head are done as such by the grace of the attention paid upon them, whether it is merited or not; contingent upon the band and musical style, the most attention-looked for are usually the ones who aren’t even worth crowing about, yet I’d prefer to imagine that, on account of the people metal world, the rapid ascent of Eluveitie is really merited. That being said, I burrows me some ELU’, and have been burrowing it all back quite a couple of years, what with the entire combination of epic tunes, addictive rhythms and melodeath reality, and sincerely I can’t completely sympathize with the nay sayers and a portion of their steady bashing of the gathering as of late. I’ve always said that there are more regrettable acts out there to censure, however would anyone say anyone is tuning in? Doesn’t seem like it. Ah well.
So it’s been quite some time since the satisfying “Everything Remains (As it Never Was)”, and I’ve been rather eager to discover what could come straightaway….
What works for this record versus a portion of the ones in the past is that the genuine feel, all things considered, while still present, is actually put to the side for a more majestic flavoring, that breezy winter-wind-through-the-forested areas approach while as yet retaining a decent amount of the cutting edge meanderings they’ve utilized in albums past. All this makes for, I’d venture to such an extreme as to say, probably Eluveitie’s best time album, more fun and atmospheric in spite of their darker takes on the old warfaring legends (if the introduction track is any indication… ), and I ended up absorbed into the album faster than past works. What helps, outside of the more positive-sounding musical minutes, is a general lack of the somewhat repetitive songwriting nature (I’m sorry to admit) the band has undertaken many occasions before; each tune, in its own specific manner, sounds new and overflowing with grand ideas and simply returning to already-utilized constructions so often. And still, at the end of the day, however, it’s still as addictive and very much done as it’s all been before.
What also makes “Helvetios” work is that the guitars have more face time than before. Presently granted, the acoustic instrumentation and the tunes therein are as yet the main focal point of the melodies, yet hearing the guitars and bass play parts that aren’t simply straightforward harmonies underscoring everything else is a decent change of pace. In any case, it’s their ability to utilize all those shortsighted compositional techniques and make them grand listens that’s been keeping my very own Eluveitie/Swiss flag rippling high in the breeze. It’s the grand scale of the interplay between all the instruments, snarling and clean singing that gives this record the staying power it demands, and it’s strange that there are other acts out there who might attempt the same thing just to whiff versus take it out of the park. Yet, whatev’, that’s their concern, and I’m simply here to talk about how the fanciness of melodies like “Home”, “A Rose for Epona”, and “The Siege” absorb and stick to you all through a damn-near exhaustive jaunt starting with one end then onto the next.
At the day’s end, “Helvetios” is another example of Eluveitie meriting their position in the people metal realm. Indeed, even at their most exceedingly terrible, they’ve done a lot to keep my attention, and chances are I’d put this at the highest point of my heap of plates asking repeated tunes in. Extremely suggested.
