Album Review The Scarecrow
Edguy’s own Tobias Sammet is really most remembered for his incredibly famous side project Avantasia which was metal’s first effective and most fruitful super gathering/rock opera project. I’ve heard it said that Sammet is egotistical and incredibly conceited, but I’ve actually met the man and what impressed me the most was his seemingly single mindedness about music; not as far as style goes (in that department he is exceptionally liberal), but in that he just loves music and will do whatever he can to get his ideas out of his head and onto a CD. Also he is incredibly dedicated to exposing individuals to metal in whatever way he can. Admittedly it appears as if all the fame has gotten to him a little bit what with the silly hats and the cane twirling, but come on, who honestly doesn’t love him even more for it. This is an exceptionally passionate man and everything he writes has immense reason to it, The Scarecrow doesn’t compare to the amazing Metal Opera which is definitely one of the single greatest force metal albums of all time (this is non-debatable), but it’s certainly his most ambitious project to date (at it’s time of release). This is the place where he turns Avantasia into something different, a bridging of rock and move from America and the mainstream with the force of traditional force metal from Europe that we love so a lot, complete with a multitude of characters in the type of different guest vocalists.
This album certainly reflects the change in his regular band Edguy which has turned from a classic force metal band into a hard stone/metal band, with Tinnitus Sanctus being the greatest example of that; but here Tobias improves occupation of that balancing the hard stone with the force metal as at no other time. One thing Sammet has never under any circumstance bobbled in his career regardless of what else he has done are his tunes. The tunes are just as amazing and breathtaking as ever here; Twisted Minds is a ground-breaking and epic start to not just another Avantasia album, but the beginning of another trilogy from Avantasia and being the most watched side project and super gathering possibly in the entire world, each and every album is of the utmost importance. Roy Khan’s smooth (and hot) murmur begins the vocal duel between Sammet and every other person that he’s invited to join him with a track that will certainly attract power metal fans in huge numbers as two of the most loved force metal singers finally come together, it’s a mid paced aggressive tune with an epic theme to really live up to the expectations placed on it by fans. Jorn Lande joins the gathering as we proceed onward to the epic The Scarecrow which may not quite compare to The Seven Angels, but it’s pretty awesome completely all alone, what’s really cool about it is this Celtic motif they have going throughout its 11 minutes and it’s really cool.
Okay so we’ve started with two mid paced frolics in greatness, but what is Avantasia without some kickass high speed power metal? Nothing, and to help make this point next up is Shelter From the Rain a pretty typical force metal track featuring Bob Catley, Michael Kiske and a kick-ass melody. In total we have three standard Avantasia power metal tracks, and obviously standard for Avantasia means awesome for every other person. Another Angel Down is quite simply amazing, the moment the tune begins any force metal fan will want to get up and start headbanging like there’s no tomorrow, seriously this stones. Devil in the Belfry is the other force metal track and it’s got another winner of a melody. Presently, there’s a reason this album is controversial and it’s because of three melodies; Carry Me Over, I Don’t Believe in Your Love and Lost in Space.
Carry Me Over is a rather repetitive hard stone melody that is enjoyable nonetheless. I Don’t Believe in Your Love is another mid paced hard stone melody with a little more metal and less repetitions of the ensemble so while this one is kind of boring comparatively it’s still enjoyable. The last and most controversial tune of this album is the essentially pop metal single Lost in Space, power metal fans will probably hate this, individuals with a little a greater amount of a receptive outlook might appreciate it, but it’s still not the greatest melody to end an album with. The ballads on this are.. well… ballads. What Kind of Love is complete crap, lame female singer and no force behind it at all. Cry Just a Little is better, it’s got a catchy chorale and a little more energy behind it, but it’s still just okay.
So we’ve got some rather incredible tunes as well as some rather mediocre tunes and one piece of crap. With regards to Avantasia it’s difficult to remain objective; strong emotional ties can make for some passionate views. I feel like the excellent tunes on this out-way the bad and allow me to give this album a high strong recommendation; to be honest I like this more than The Metal Opera Pt.2, for the liberal it’s awesome and non-receptive individuals can go screw themselves.
