Album Review
Aside from Horde’s “Hellig Usvart”, this particular collection appears to have earned a reputation as being the unblack metal collection to get. Unfortunately, when of this writing, it is not, at this point in print – it would be nothing shy of a miracle to find it now.
Nonetheless, consider this masterwork of Antestor’s to be the direct inverse of that other milestone unblack collection mentioned previously. Instead of white noise and enormous production, what we are given is a collection of epic degree, melodic and vicious all simultaneously.
Sound-wise, I would contrast the collection with Dissection’s sound on “Storm of the Light’s Bane”, with a bit of Dimmu and Emperor symphonics, as well as some society influences mixed in as well. The Dissection influence is all through, and for me, this is a significant in addition to – “Storm of the Light’s Bane” is a masterpiece, so to have something similar that is additionally Christian is a Godsend.
All things considered, the collection is fairly exaggerated. It begins in massive structure – medieval sounding female vocals introduce the merciless track, “Rites of Death”, which pulverizes the listener into supreme submission, before ostensibly the best track on the collection, “Old Times Cruelty”, kicks in. Hellhammer of Mayhem popularity’s drumming truly shines here – precision blastbeats interlaced with skilled percussion work and cymbal contacts all combine for an ideal listening experience.
The issue is that these impeccable tracks appear to go downhill from that point, in exceptionally slight degrees. It’s not that any track on this fantastic disk is necessarily awful fundamentally, it’s only that after the astonishing first two tracks, the collection gradually lets the listener down to earth. It’s like seeing paradise and having to return rational. Also, the epic force metal-style performances on the last 50% of the collection will be a little bit a lot. They have their niche in melodic dark metal, indeed, yet sometimes Antestor veers a little too into stadium-rock territory close to the furthest limit of the collection.
Those minor imperfections aside, one can’t be blamed under any circumstance in acquiring this disk – it’s fantastic from beginning to end (however it has its good and bad times, relatively speaking). The musical skill on display here is first rate, the vocals are primal and savage cries, and when the band gets nasty, they get NASTY. For melodic dark metal, there are not many collections out there as great as this one; for Christian dark metal fans, it’s an absolute necessity, and by a wide margin surpasses the band’s earlier endeavors.
