Gothic metal with male/female alternating vocals is a genre that has become very hackneyed. Nevertheless, every now and then there are bands that can still mark positive accents in this area. One of them is PETTALOM. On their debut the Brazilians rely on a mixture of Theatre Of Tragedy borrowings, Paradise Lost-like guitar melodies and long instrumental passages. In addition, the deep male vocals are really audible throughout, in contrast to many genre colleagues who only grunt expressionlessly to themselves. The real attraction with the troupe, however, is the soprano Katia Santana, who really masters her métier and doesn’t get on your nerves with off-key tones. Parallels to Tarja from Nightwish are not really far-fetched, even if Katja doesn’t sing quite as powerfully, but her voice often seems rather delicate and elfish. Therefore, fans of Nightwish should give the band from Sao Paulo a chance, because here are really good and very catchy songs at the start. Sure, PETTALOM are still far from being as good as the Finns, and here and there a few lengths have crept in – like for example the rather unspectacular and too long staged guitar solo in ‘Celibate’. But a good debut they have succeeded in any case.
